Some time ago...

Father Ashur—the real Father Ashur—was not in control of his actions. No, Gogrem had complete control now and the demon wasn’t loosening his grasp on him whatsoever. Every move Father Ashur made was dictated by the demon. He had taken the steering wheel away from the priest and wasn’t letting him get back to it. He was in control and Father Ashur could only watch as his body was piloted without his consent.

In the depths of his mind, he was trapped in total darkness except for a circle in the sky where he could see what his body was seeing. He might not have been able to control his body or say the things he wanted to say, but he was still able to watch, though he suspected it was only because Gogrem allowed it. He wanted him to do things he would never do, forced him to watch as he made a mockery of him, and stained his soul with all kinds of horrible acts. It didn’t take long for Gogrem to start doing horrible things once he was in control, and Father Ashur had to watch all of it.

“Are you enjoying the show?”

He turned and found the image of himself he’d seen in that motel mirror. It looked just like him except for the expression and the strange look in his eye. It was actually Gogrem clearly, coming to pay him a visit inside of his own mind, in the mental prison that had been made for him.

“You aren’t going to get away with this.”

“I already have.”

“Not for much longer. Father Guidry is going to figure it out, and when he does—”

“When he does, I’ll kill him,” Gogrem said with a shrug without a care in the world. “Or, I suppose it is more accurate to say that we will kill him.”

“I won’t have any part of it.”

“Of course you will,” Gogrem said cheerfully. “Since I’ll murder him with your hands. How poetic is that? The exorcist being murdered by his possessed student? There is something so lovely about that, don’t you think?”

“I won’t.”

“Have you learned nothing from being stuck in this dome? Have you not seen any of it, any of what is going on outside? You really should. It’s great. You just don’t seem grateful.”

“I’m not! Why would I be grateful!? What exactly should I be thanking you for? Hmm? For taking my body? For forcing me to do awful things? For staining my soul with your filth!?”

“Without me, you would just be doing the work of the church. You used to be in charge of a congregation for a period of time, yes? And now you are throwing your life away, getting rid of demons when we are always going to climb our way out of Hell. You are just wasting your time. We are never going to stay gone no matter how often you put us in a box or send us back to Hell. It’s a pointless job. Why throw your
